I submitted the following statement to the Capital Regional District (CRD) Board this week, supporting Saanich Councillor Vic Derman’s motion on the Marine Trail Holdings Ltd. development proposal along the Juan de Fuca Trail:
“As a resident and taxpayer in the CRD, I strongly support Director Derman’s motion:
- This development proposal is inconsistent with the Regional Growth Strategy;
- Existing transportation infrastructure cannot handle densification west of the Sooke District. If allowed to proceed, this development would contribute to increased traffic congestion and increase the safety risks to motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and residents along the West Coast Road;
- Existing fire infrastructure cannot handle densification beyond the Sooke District. This development therefore increases the risk to persons and property in the likely event of an interface fire;
- Existing water and sewer services cannot handle densification beyond the Sooke District. This development would therefore contribute to groundwater degradation and pollution, or alternately impose increased infrastructure servicing costs on CRD residents.
- The undeveloped coastal lands beyond the Sooke District provide a valuable recreational and natural space for thousands of CRD residents. This development would contribute to the loss of habitat and ecosystems, degrading the quality of life and recreational options for residents.”

I completely support the preservation of these naturally valuable lands and the logic behind Vic Derman’s motion, and this neccessary movement. Thanks for keeping your eye on the bigger CRD picture Ben. And, YES on the art, culture and community bonding above with the dragon boats. Keep the vids coming!
